Get Licensed to Sell Health Insurance
Q: What licenses do I Need?
A: Getting your health insurance license is a requirement to sell Medicare plans in any state. Each state has a state required test that you must pass in order to sell health insurance. Some carriers are also moving towards the need to have a Life license as well. Current carriers that require this are Anthem BCBS.
Q: How do I get my license?
A: In most cases, you can Google “health insurance licensing in [your state]” This will give you a list of schools and educational resources that you can utilize. There are usually both classroom trainings and self-study guides available. You can choose which option is best for you. Once you feel comfortable with the information, contact the testing facility in your state to schedule the test.
Q: What is next after I pass the test?
A: The testing center will give your scores to the state licensing bureau. You will pay the licensing fees and wait for your license to be issued, (the actual procedure can vary from state to state) Contact your State Department of Insurance for questions.
Q: How long does this process take?
A: The length of the process depends on you and how quickly you want to receive your license. Additionally, some states may require you take a course prior to taking the licensing exam. We recommend you take the practice tests and score well on them before proceeding to a testing center. Every time you have to take the test, you will have to pay a fee. Good luck and pass it on the first try!!
